Do You Have to Declare PPF to Your Insurance Company?
Do You Have to Declare PPF to Your Insurance Company?
You've just spent $2,000 protecting the front end of your car with Paint Protection Film (PPF). A month later, someone backs into your bumper in a parking lot. The body shop can fix the bumper, but who pays to replace the PPF? To ensure you are covered, you absolutely should declare your PPF to your insurance company.
Is PPF Covered Under Standard Policies?
Most standard auto insurance policies cover the vehicle as it left the factory. Because PPF is considered an aftermarket modification or accessory, it is often not covered by default unless you have specific "custom parts and equipment" (CPE) coverage.
How to Ensure You Are Covered
Once your PPF is installed, call your insurance agent. Tell them you have added Paint Protection Film and provide them with the invoice from your installer. Many insurance companies will allow you to add an endorsement or additional coverage for aftermarket accessories for a very small increase in your premium (often just a few dollars a month).
What Happens After an Accident?
If you are in an accident and the PPF needs to be replaced, provide the claims adjuster with your original PPF invoice. If the other driver was at fault, their insurance is legally obligated to make you "whole" again, which includes replacing the PPF on the repaired panels, regardless of your own policy's accessory limits.
